Most GP surgeries in Scotland will shut for eight days over Christmas and New Year despite "genuine concern" about the pressure it will place on accident and emergency departments. The College of Emergency Medicine Scotland has warned patients are likely to face longer waits for treatment in overcrowded hospitals as practices close their doors for the two bank holiday weekends. Health boards have been contacting surgeries to ask if they would consider offering some appointments during the festive period. It's two years since Christmas and New year have fallen directly beside a weekend.

TOPIC 2: FOOTBALL BOOZE BAN
It's emerged that the ban on the sale of alcohol inside Scottish football stadiums could be lifted after the chief executive of the Scottish Football Association, Stewart Regan, stated that talks with Police Scotland have already taken place about the issue. Earlier in the week at the SFA Convention at Hampden sports promoter Barry Hearn called the current ban "insulting for people who go to a football match." The restriction was introduced following rioting during the Scottish Cup Final between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden in 1980. As it stand In Scotland, alcohol can only be sold to fans in hospitality and corporate areas during football matches. In England, football fans can buy a drink on the concourses at designated times during and after games, but are not allowed to take alcohol back to their seats.
