New figures show that a record number of people will end up having public health funerals this year. Last year, 459 people required state funded services in Scotland - and the number is expected to be even more this year. More than 拢1.7m was spent by councils over the past five years on burials and cremations. But the bill for 2015 is already looking to exceed more than 拢500,000 - because of rising numbers of people dying penniless or without family. An average cost of a burial and service in Scotland is 拢5,044 and a cremation, 拢4,425. Basic state funded funerals cost upwards of 拢950.
