Room to Read is a global non-profit organisation focused on improving literacy and gender equality in education in low-income countries. We believe that every child deserves a quality education, no matter the situation they were born into. Yet in many parts of Asia and Africa, especially in rural communities, many children are still denied this basic human right.

In the communities where Room to Read works, a relatively small investment can have a major impact on the lives of hundreds and thousands of children. Room to Read develops literacy skills and the habit of reading among primary school children, and supports girls in completing secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Esther is from Zambia and comes from a family of nine in an overcrowded township in Lusaka. She had to drop out of school because her family could no longer afford to continue her education, leaving her with little hope for a better life.

But Esther got a second chance. Room to Read helped Esther continue her education by paying her school fees and introducing her to a female mentor who provided her with the life skills she needed to build her confidence and assertiveness.

After graduating from secondary school, Esther worked as a counsellor for prisoners and was able to save up and fund her future studies. Esther is now pursuing a degree in Public Administration and is a role model for her younger siblings. She hopes that more children around the world will benefit from Room to Read in the way that she has.
