Brothers Fred and Jimmy O'Donnell have been apart for 80 years. Their Irish mother gave birth to Jimmy first, who was placed in an orphanage. Fred grew up in Catholic-run boy's institution, and their mum was taken to a Magdalene Laundry, where she remained as a 'fallen woman' for the rest of her life. As an adult, Fred came to England and raised a family in Bradford. His daughter Theresa was determined to find his mother for him, and eventually traced her, only to discover that she'd died recently. But her records revealed that she'd also had Jimmy. A family tracing agency found him living in Cheltenham, now aged 80. Fred, Theresa and his other daughter Patricia head to Cheltenham to have their first ever Christmas dinner with Uncle Jimmy.

Sisters Tessa and Jan's father died when they were young. Unbeknown to them, he and their mother had been divorced for some time and he had been in a relationship with another woman, Rosemary. Soon after he died, Rosemary gave birth to his twins, Chris and Jennie, whom she brought up alone. A chance conversation with a friend at a drinks party revealed the twins' existence to Tessa, and her husband Alan did some genealogical detective work to connect them all. Tessa and Jan meet with Chris and Jennie, and they all visit their shared father's grave for the very first time, to pay their respects.
