How to Have a Healthier, Happier Period

Gillian Russell asks why periods are still a taboo subject and if diet, exercise and a positive attitude can help people understand and cope with them better.

The curse. Having The Painters In. Aunt Flo. Red River. Mother Nature. There are plenty of euphemisms for having a period but even in 2017 it still feels like a taboo subject. On today's Personal Best Gillian Russell and the team will be asking the questions some of us are just too shy to talk about.

Women's health expert and writer Emma Cannon talks about the importance of having a more open and positive relationship with our period. How important is it for us to listen to our bodies and understand the impact nutrition, sleep and relaxation can have on our symptoms?

It may be the last thing you feel like doing but how much does exercise help when we've got our period? Exercise physiologist Nikki Gibson from SportScotland Institute Of Sport explains what exactly is going on in our bodies and how we can gauge what kind of exercise might be the most useful.
