Russian Religion, Respect and Tuam

Audrey Carville and guests debate the week's religious and ethical news and explore the world of culture and ideas.

The ongoing controversy over the discovery of a significant number of infants' remains on the site of a former mother and baby home in Tuam County Galway which the Taoiseach Enda Kenny described as a "chamber of horrors". Did Irish society bury its compassion, mercy and humanity?

Civility is often the first casualty of the hustings but can we really blame the politicians? Are they not, after all, a reflection of who we generally are as a population. Have we lost our manners and evolved into grunting, uncaring creatures or are we just a little more straight talking these days?

We hear plenty about that thing we always want but often fail to give - respect but what is it? What exactly do we mean by that term?
Audrey Carville is joined by the academic and former board member of the Community relations Council Dr Leon Litvak, Jesuit Priest Father Thomas Casey and Presbyterian Minister the Reverend Cheryl Meban.

Catholics in Britain - For a man who doesn't believe, the former Labour Party Deputy Leader Roy Hattersley seems rather obsessive about religion.
He tells Sunday Sequence about his latest work, the history of Catholics in Britain, the survival of prosecution, persecution and institutionalised discrimination.

And It's now more than 25 years since the fall of communism in Russia. In the decades prior to those epic times of Gorbachev and Yeltsin, religion was suppressed, churches demolished or used for other purposes and generations of Russians grew up without worship.

While the Orthodox Church has re-established itself at the top of society again, what of the people, have they really re-embraced religion or for millions did 60 years of habit erase faith from family life?

Audrey Carville talks to Geraldine Fagan, the author of Believing in Russia - Religious Policy after Communism.
