Clue 1: This is one of the earliest Anglo-Saxon place-names in Scotland, but contains an earlier Celtic name.
Clue 2: The local headland is named after the abbess of a 7th-century monastery here
Clue 3: Writing in the 8th century, the Venerable Bede gave the place-name in Latin as Coludi Urbem and described the monastery as monasterium uirginum 'monastery of virgins'.
Clue 4: Queen (later Saint) Aethelthryth entered the monastery in 672 to become a nun.
Clue 5: There is good fishing here, but the local pronunciation of the place-name might suggest farming instead.
