Double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson was unbeaten over 100m last year and the jet-heeled Jamaican was eager to extend that record in China against a loaded field that included multiple global gold medallist Veronica Campbell-Brown and Rio 2016 silver medallist Tori Bowie.

Former world champions Justin Gatlin and Kim Collins went head to head in the men's 100m, while Great Britain's Adam Gemili was among four Olympic finalists in the men's 200m.
