But sheriffs can be politically controversial figures too - none more so than Joe Arpaio, sheriff of Maricopa County Arizona for 24 years until 2016. A self-styled tough guy, who was convicted of criminal contempt and controversially pardoned by president Donald Trump in August. Did Joe Arpaio betray the American values he pledged to uphold?
