Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Writer and Musician, Jahnavi Harrison:

Yesterday I watched a really beautiful 3 minute film 鈥 you can check it out on the 主播大秀 website actually 鈥 about an Ethiopian priest who climbs a 250 metre cliff every single day to a tiny church built into the rock. All day long, he sits inside the dark stone cavern, studying the ancient holy books that are kept there.

It takes him two hours to walk to the cliff from his home, setting out at 6am after finishing his household work, and two hours to walk back in the evening. He climbs without any ropes or gear, but he says he鈥檚 never afraid because he feels the saints are protecting him. None of the previous church priests have ever fallen during their daily climb.

After the first 30 seconds I was intrigued but I noticed my immediate thought was 鈥 well why live 2 hours from the cliff? Why not just live at the base, then you can cut down the commuting time. Or why not live up there for a few days at a time and give your legs a break? Why not make a copy of the books and read them at home? Of course, that really is irrelevant. His beautiful daily activity is prayer in motion.

My urbanised modern mind is habituated to think of streamlining: what鈥檚 the way of doing this that involves least effort and fuss? Call it laziness, or some might say it鈥檚 intelligence 鈥 maybe both!

Watching the priest, I was reminded that life 鈥 even one with lots of nice things in it 鈥 is not about how efficient I am and how much I get done, but the consciousness I carry; how I am being nourished from within. In the Hindu tradition 鈥 and in all religions as far as I know, this has so much to do with environment and habits. Things like waking up early in the morning, making some time to connect with ancient wisdom every day, practising compassion and kindness towards myself and others, and practising meditation 鈥 even if it means taking a bit longer to get somewhere because the walk brings peace of mind.

In a very unassuming, matter-of-fact way, the priest said - 鈥業 am happy in my heart鈥. What a wonderful, precious statement 鈥

I don鈥檛 think you need to climb a mountain every day to be happy 鈥 but perhaps slowing down is a start.听
