Kate Molleson concludes a week of concerts featuring the 主播大秀 Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Today: Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich recorded in Edinburgh, and Schumann with violinist Ilya Gringolts from a concert recorded in Leeds.

Afternoon Concert this week focuses on the 主播大秀 Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and concludes with a concert they gave at Edinburgh's Usher Hall in December. They were joined by the powerhouse Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin for Tchaikovsky's enduringly popular First Piano Concerto, while the second half of the concert was given over to Shostakovich's giant depiction of the events of the 1905 Russian Revolution: his Symphony No 11.

That's followed by a pair of orchestral depictions of winter by the Scottish composer Helen Grime, her Two Eardley Pictures: 'Catterline in Winter' and 'Snow'.

Then there's a recording made in Leeds last November, in which the Russian virtuoso Ilya Gringolts joined the 主播大秀 Scottish Symphony Orchestra to perform Schumann's Violin Concerto. This was a work, written towards the end of the composer's troubled life, that remained unheard for over 80 years, finally seeing the light of day in the 1930s.
