Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

I was surprised and grateful so many people contacted me after last week鈥檚 PFT. Hope is obviously a popular theme. Maybe it鈥檚 because many of us have doubts about how well we鈥檙e coping.

I believe having the right attitude is vital. Many of the important things in the world are accomplished by people who just keep on trying.

First of all we should count our blessings. Make time to be aware of what makes you to happy. It could be a small thing like seeing a daffodil or hearing the cuckoo. Or it could be a big thing 鈥搇ike seeing your children take their first steps.

I鈥檝e learned from experience that both virtue and vice become easier with practice. So I try to do good as often as I can. I鈥檒l consciously be a courteous driver, or I鈥檒l let a person in a hurry go ahead of me in the queue. Sometimes I鈥檒l buy a lunch for a homeless person and spend time with them. It鈥檚 funny how helping others actually boosts my own self-esteem.

It鈥檚 SO important to enjoy the little pleasures of life when they come along. Really savour a good meal. Make mental pictures of pleasurable moments and replay them in your mind.

A mighty boost to my own peace of mind is to let go of grudges. I was told once that holding on to resentment is like me taking poison and expecting my enemy to die.

It took me a lifetime to realise that much of the deep-seated loneliness I experienced was my own fault. What else should I expect if I don鈥檛 spend time with family and loyal friends. Meaningful relationships don鈥檛 just happen they have to be worked on.

Taking care of myself is a necessity not a luxury. This is the only body I have .Sleep, exercise, proper food and rest are essential not only for healthy living, but for peace of mind as well.

Finally, pleasure is not a sin, it鈥檚 a precious gift. I believe I鈥檒l have to answer to God for the permissible pleasures in life which I failed to enjoy.
