HYMN – LET ALL THE WORLD IN EVERY CORNER SING

Ìý

Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The heavens are not too high,
His praise may thither fly;
The earth is not too low,
His praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!

Ìý

Let all the world in every corner sing,
"My God and King!"
The church with psalms must shout:
No door can keep them out.
But above all, the heart
Must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!

Fr KevinÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Good morning and welcome to St Bride’s Episcopal Church.

You join us in the midst of Glasgow’s annual West End Festival in this vibrant area of our city.

The Festival is in its 23rd year; and now embraces some 400 events ranging from children's authors to guided walks, with all kinds of music.Ìý

This beautiful church, with its wonderful acoustic, is one of many churches in the West End that host performances and concerts during the Festival.Ìý

Our Hill and Son organ, built in 1865, has just undergone a full restoration and is once more in marvellous voice.

The University of Glasgow sits nearby, and we welcome the University’s Chapel Choir to join our own St Bride’s choir this morning. The anthem, which we will hear after the sermon, was composed by Harold Thalange, a student and member of the Chapel Choir, singing with us today.

Ìý

But as we celebrate this festival of artistic and community spirit, so our thoughts and prayers this morning go to all the students and staff, present and past, of the Glasgow School of Art which, on Friday night, suffered its second devastating fire, just months before the completion of its restoration and its recommissioning following the fire of four years ago. We give thanks that none – staff, students, firefighters - seem to have been physically harmed; and we pray that all will find the strength and faith, faith in God and faith in their artistic heritage, to begin once more the task of rebuilding the great Charles Rennie Mackintosh building, perhaps Glasgow’s most loved building; and all the other buildings affected by the fire.

Comparisons between this and that tragic blaze at Grenfell, commemorated in the the last few days, are not of the same order. ÌýYet once more we find ourselves in that familiar place of human living, where art, poetry, music, drama and community celebrations are challenged to find courage against a backdrop of sadness, and to express all that is good and true.Ìý And Bishop Gregor, our Diocesan Bishop, born and raised just a couple of miles from here, will reflect on faith and the creative life in his sermon.

Now let us prepare to worship God on this, the Third Sunday after Trinity.

Anne ClacksonÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý A reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians:

Ìý

So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For all of us must appear before the judgement seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil. For the love of Christ urges us on, because we are convinced that one has died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all, so that those who live might live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised for them.

From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

ÌýJohnÌý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Jesus said to the crowds, ‘The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come.’

He also said, ‘With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.’

With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.

Bishop Gregor ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Sermon

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.

AllÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Amen

The Second Letter of St Paul to the Corinthians, Chapter 5 at Verse 7:Ìý “… for we walk by faith, not by sight.

These words of the apostle we can take as a reliable guide for Christian living, both in the church and in the world. For example, in the church. Today we celebrate the Eucharist at which the faithful come to receive Holy Communion. Holy Communion looks like bread and wine, but our faith in Christ’s promises and in the consecrating power of God the Holy Spirit enables us to trust that it is more than that, far more, that it is in reality the bearer of Christ’s unending life among us - for we walk by faith, not by sight.Ìý

And in the world, we do not see the fullness of the Kingdom Jesus speaks of in today’s Gospel but, rather, much that is clean contrary to it, yet still, in faith, we direct our lives towards that state of affairs where all will find a safe place in the branches of God’s tree of life, however distant it may seem to us now -- for we walk by faith, and not by sight.Ìý

And it is our experience that those who so direct their living in the world, will be blessed with glimpses of what faith trusts in and hopes for, even in the midst of the chaos, darkness and confusion that beset us every day.

Which, oddly enough, brings me to the West End Festival, Glasgow’s largest cultural event, which every June takes over this popular and beautiful area of our city with a wide variety of events and performances, hundreds of them. Those who walk by faith and not merely by sight will find in this glorious sunburst of creativity in the performing arts glimpses of the God-given human potential for enriching our common life with the gifts showered upon us by God, an enriching and a gifting that will come to fullness, it is our faith, one day in God’s good kingdom.

It is this creativity that lay at the heart of our Art School building. ÌýMuch that sprang from its exquisite expression was destroyed four years ago by fire, causing anguish to those whose work was lost and livelihoods threatened, as well as those who loved its historic design and craftsmanship. ÌýIts place in the hearts of the city’s people was unique, even for many who never studied or worked within its walls. ÌýThey saw how the impulse which created it bore the stamp of the city’s character and individuality. ÌýThey understood how the spirit of the building opened its doors to talented people of all kinds, from all backgrounds, sharing a vision of artistic truth for the enrichment of us all. ÌýThis is indeed a moment when many will be challenged to walk by faith, not by the sights they are witnessing. ÌýAnd yet, we feel perhaps an even stronger compulsion to take courage, not to allow the pain of this second fire to blot out that glorious sunburst, but to offer consolation and the resilience for which our people are famous, in the face of the world’s darkness.

So, it is our great privilege and very deep joy, to offer our thanksgiving, our Eucharist, to God at the heart of and for this great Festival, just because walking by faith and not by sight is such an exciting and open-ended way of living, ready to find and embrace blessings of many kinds in what is so often a hard and unforgiving world. One of these is this culture fest, so that walking by faith, and not by sight, and offering the Eucharist, we bless God for the West End Festival of the year of our Lord 2018.

Amen

Fr KevinÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý All glory and thanksgiving be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; and who did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memorial of that his precious death and sacrifice until his coming again.

For, in the night that he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you:

Bells are rung x 3 ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Do this in remembrance of me.

Censed x 3ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

Likewise after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,

Drink ye all of this, for this is my Blood of the new testament,

which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins:

Bells are rung x 3ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Do this as oft as ye shall drink it in remembrance of me.

Wherefore, O Lord, and heavenly Father, we thy humble servants do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion, and precious death, his mighty resurrection, and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory.

And we thine unworthy servants beseech thee, most merciful Father, to hear us, and to send thy Holy Spirit upon us and upon these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine, that, being blessed and hallowed by his life-giving power, they may become the Body and Blood of thy most dearly beloved Son, to the end that all who shall receive the same may be sanctified both in body and soul, and preserved unto everlasting life.

And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, beseeching thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences,
