Interval Proms Plus: Poet, playwright and librettist Glyn Maxwell has retraced Auden's travels in Iceland. He joins Polly Clark, whose recent novel Larchfield explored Auden's early years teaching in Scotland, to discuss Auden's poetry and his influence on other artists. Hosted by Matthew Sweet.

Marin Alsop, a prot茅g茅e of Leonard Bernstein, returns to the Proms with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for a politically charged climax to our bank-holiday Bernstein weekend. The concert culminates in Shostakovich鈥檚 ambiguous Fifth Symphony, whose triumphant finale can be heard either as political protest or capitulation to Stalin鈥檚 Soviet regime. Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet joins the orchestra for Bernstein鈥檚 鈥楾he Age of Anxiety鈥� 鈥� a musical quest for faith in a broken, post-war world 鈥� and the evening opens with the boisterous Slava!, a 鈥榩olitical overture鈥� dedicated to cellist Mstislav Rostropovich.
