Bees have long held a fascination for humans the world over, with beekeeping having been practised since the time of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. Today these incredible, tiny insects are still a vital part of our ecology as we rely on them to pollinate 87 per cent of flowering plants and 35 per cent of our crops worldwide. But their numbers have been in sharp decline in recent decades across the globe due to disease, pesticides, pollution and loss of habitat, and Scotland has its own challenges.

We take a closer look at these amazing creatures and the challenges they must overcome to ensure their survival. We also explore the recent rise in urban beekeeping, discover some hives in some unexpected parts of Scotland, and follow Amanda Millen as she sets up her own bee colony in Glasgow.
