A look at America in the 1950s - known as the golden years to many Americans - in colour for the first time

Airson na h-Ameireaganaich, ’s e àm glòrmhor a th’ anns na 50an. Le faochadh an dèidh an dàrna cogaidh, bha beatha an nàisein sunndach. Tha an ginealach ùr toilichte le sìth, soirbheachas eacanomaigeach agus adhartas a thaobh teicneòlais. Ach air cùlaibh seo, ’s e amannan draghail a th’ ann. Bha an strì an aghaidh comannachas a’ fàs le crìochan gan dèanamh fiù ’s ann am fànas.

Tha Korea a Tuath a’ toirt ionnsaigh air na nàbaidhean aca anns a’ cheann a deas agus le eagal ’s gun sgapadh comannachas, tha Truman a’ cur saighdearan a-null leis an t-seanailear Douglas MacArtair aig an stiùir. Aig an aon àm, tha gràin-cinnidh a’ sgaradh an nàisein agus tha an Cogadh Fuar a’ toirt buaidh air an t-saoghal air fad.

Tha seo a’ toirt spionnadh do dh’ Ameireaga ’s iad a’ dèanamh an adhartas teicneòlais as motha a chaidh a dhèanamh a-riamh. Tha tasglann, air a shealltainn ann an dath airson a’ chiad uair a-riamh, a’ dèanamh dealbh air na 50an ann an dòigh nach fhacas a-riamh.

To Americans the 1950s are the golden years. Having recovered from World War II, the life of the nation was on the up. The new generation are enjoying peace, economic prosperity and great technological advances. But behind this perfect façade are troubling times. The confrontation with communism was expanding and new battle lines were being drawn in the unchartered territory of space. North Korea invades its southern neighbour and fearing the spread of communism, Truman sends troops lead by General Douglas Macarthur.

Back at home, racial hatred divides the nation and the Cold War throws a long shadow over the globe. This spurs America into its greatest technological achievement yet. With rare archive and home movies, seen in colour for the first time, this is the story of the 1950s as you've never seen it before.
