Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest:

鈥淵ou鈥檙e as sick as your secrets鈥 is a tried and trusted principle in addiction recovery. When you say it out loud it鈥檚 easier to get what it means. Fear of divulging 鈥渟ecrets鈥 can become an unhealthy obsession. Leading a double life leaves us vulnerable and open to manipulation. And it鈥檚 all so unnecessary.

Secrecy is enemy of good relationships. I鈥檝e seen it in communities, marriages and in business. I鈥檓 convinced that the root of it all is how we see ourselves.

When we learn to accept ourselves - with all our gifts and faults - we don鈥檛 need to be deceptive.聽 We recognise there鈥檚 nothing to be gained from self-imposed anxiety. The God I believe in never gives up on me. My value comes from within. That鈥檚 Faith in a nutshell.聽聽

Self-image comes from the people around us and the experiences of life.聽 However, I believe, it鈥檚 the meaning I give to those experiences which colours my view of myself.

The experts assure us that we are the product of the people we live and work with because we allow them to shape us, whether they want to or not. I have a friend who insists that if you passionately believe in your dream, you will eventually create it; one person with real belief is better than a hundred with merely an interest.聽

My friend is a successful football coach and his teams have medals to prove his theory.聽

It鈥檚 only now I鈥檓 beginning to understand his methods. I believe we actually create the problems which limit us. A person with relationship problems, for example, will always have relationship problems until they recognise, and then let go of, the attitudes smothering their progress.

Experience tells me that the key to life is where I focus. Focus on what I haven鈥檛 got and I鈥檒l get more of the same. Dig deep to find what鈥檚 sabotaging my progress and I鈥檒l discover the power within, which enables me to fulfil my potential.

In short, what some of us like to call fate is nothing of the kind 鈥 it鈥檚 my own mind-set.

In life you either make excuses or you make things happen.
