Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Dave Tomlinson,Ìýwriter and vicar:

Ìý

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of giving a talk at St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace in the City of London – on the Feast of St Ethelburga. The church which dates back to the 15th century is renowned for sustaining a bomb-blast by the IRA in 1993 which killed one person, injured 40 and left 70% of the church in ruins.

Ìý

Amid confusion about what should happen to the remains, Richard Chartres, then Bishop of London, proposed the idea of making it a place for peace and reconciliation, which now incorporates a magnificent, goat-skin covered Bedouin tent, designed for dialogue, workshops and negotiations. Nestling in the midst of city towers on a site of violent terror, in its weirdly wonderful way, the tent bears witness to the dauntless power of fragile efforts at peace in the world.

Ìý

Ethelburga, herself, who died in 675 was a ground-breaker who refused an arranged marriage (and paid a price for that), then became the first leader of a monastic order for women. She is especially noted for her heroic conduct in caring for the sick during an outbreak of the plague that eventually killed her and most of her community.

Ìý

Ethelburga epitomises a strong woman who exemplifies the virtues of leadership and commitment to social action even to the point of death. Yet, I confess that I never heard of her until the IRA bombing. Like so many incredible women in history, her reputation is overshadowed by accounts of venerated male counterparts.

Ìý

Which is why I loved last Sunday’s episode of Dr Who in which the Doctor and her companions meet civil rights activist Rosa Parks and watch as she famously refuses to give up her bus seat for white passengers. As well as introducing new generations to a legendary moment, the writers resisted the temptation to have the doctor or anyone else ‘inspire’ Rosa into taking the action. It remains the courageous act of an ordinary woman.

Ìý

Our world faces massive social, political, economic and environmental challenges. And I certainly take heart from women like Rosa Parks and Ethelburga – and from a scarred church and a Bedouin tent in central London – which remind me that there is always hope when we choose courage over fear.
