Holy Week

Aled Jones and a choir of Christians make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land to walk in Jesus's last steps, visiting some of the most sacred Christian sites on earth.

Aled Jones and a choir of Christians make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land to walk in Jesus's last steps, visiting some of the most sacred Christian sites on the planet. These include the Garden of Gethsemane and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus is believed to have been crucified, buried and resurrected. All our hymns are sung by our choir in Jerusalem. Shaun Escoffery, star of the West End musical The Lion King, performs Andrew Lloyd Webber’s song Gethsemane, from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Stories

Palm Sunday
The Mount of Olives is to the East of Jerusalem and is believed to be where Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey.  To find out exactly what happened in this place, Aled and our choir travel the same route Jesus would have travelled.  They are joined by Helen Bond, Professor of Christian Origins at Edinburgh University. They arrive at Dominus Flevit Church, where Helen reveals the story of Palm Sunday.

Maundy Thursday
Exploring other important Christian traditions people observe during Holy Week, Aled and the choir visit St George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem, to find out more about Maundy Thursday.  This was the day Jesus sat down with his disciples and washed their feet, humbling himself to them.  Songs of Praise Music Director Ken Burton and one of the choir members Kwame recreate the scene not far from where it actually happened over 2000 years ago.

Garden Of Gethsemane
Aled and the Choir visit the Garden of Gethsemane, exploring how, after the Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples went there to pray. Archaeologist Danny Herman and Historian Helen Bond explore the significance of what took place there, as well as the circumstantial proof that this was indeed where Jesus and his disciples would spent time after the Last Supper.

Good Friday
Archaeologist Danny Herman reveals what is believed to have happened along this route of the Via Dolorosa, where he is sentenced to death by Pontius Pilates the Governor of Judea.  Aled Jones and the choir follow the route Jesus travelled carrying his cross to the hill of crucifixion – Golgotha, now inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre built over these sacred sites.  At the church, our choir of pilgrims pray and recount their experience of Jerusalem.
