Rhododendrons, Asparagus and Edible Windowsills

Nicola Singleton explores the woodland garden at Glendoick with Ken Cox. Graeme Pallister enjoys the first asparagus of the season and Carole Baxter creates a windowsill garden.

Nicola Singleton visits the 100 year old woodland garden at Glendoick in Tayside. It鈥檚 a collection of rare and beautiful rhododendrons gathered from the foothills of the Himalaya in Tibet, Nepal and China by 3 generations of the Cox family.

Plant hunter, world rhododendron expert and 3rd inline of the family, Ken Cox gives Nicola a tour of the garden describing how his father and grandfather initially bought plant samples unknown to science back to Scotland and then created hybrids particularly suited to the our climate. In doing so, they showed off their love of Scottish birds and mountains when creating names for them.

Grow It isn鈥檛 just about gardening, it鈥檚 about seasonal sensations in your kitchen too. So Chef Graeme Pallister is making a simple delight out of the very first of the Scottish asparagus he can get his hands on.

While Rhododendrons and asparagus need a lot of space, not everyone has that luxury, so Carole Baxter gives Helen Needham a masterclass on what she can grow on her window sill.
