Relive the end of a decade, the end of a century and the end of a millennium. 1999 was a momentous year in Scottish politics as the country goes to the polls.

And at the end of a decade, it’s the start of a currency as the Euro is launched in 11 European countries. It’s only used for electronic payments initially, but countries will adopt the coins and notes in the future.

It’s momentous year in Scottish politics as the country goes to the polls to elect politicians for the newly devolved parliament, which is opened by the Queen in July.

On TV, there’s a new comedy sketch show called Chewin the Fat, and viewers are introduced to two mischievous OAPs called Jack and Victor.

There’s a strong Scottish presence in this year’s Bond movie, The World Is Not Enough, in which Robbie Coltrane plays a Russian mafia head alongside Pierce Brosnan as 007, Robert Carlyle plays the villain and there’s even an appearance from Scottish landmark Eilean Donan Castle as M16’s Scottish headquarters.

Scotland also dominate in the Rugby Five Nations Championship, beating Wales, Ireland and France, Gregor Townsend scores a try in all four games of the tournament.

In football, Manchester United, managed by Scotsman Alex Ferguson, win an unprecedented treble: the UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League and the FA cup.

After five years as president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela steps down and is replaced by Thabo Mbeki.

In the US, Columbine High School in Colorado becomes the scene of the deadliest school shooting to date. The event prompts a debate on gun control and school safety.

Libya finally extradites the two men suspected of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in 1988 and agrees to the trial taking place at Camp Zeist in the Netherlands under Scottish Law.

1999 is also the year that sees growing concern about the ‘Millennium Bug’, the feared computer glitch that it’s thought will cause chaos around the world as the calendar goes from 1999 to 2000. Measures are put in place to deal with any problems that occur at the very end of the year and the start of the new one.

But to stop us worrying about Millennium mayhem, in 1999 there was lots of great entertainment. Ewan McGregor stars as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the long-awaited Star Wars prequel, Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.

Britney Spears has an international hit with her debut single ...Baby One More Time, and Travis release their breakthrough single, Why Does It Always Rain On Me? from the album The Man Who.

The year ends with millennial celebrations around the world welcoming in the year 2000, so relive those and lots of other memorable moments in Rewind 1999.
