'Bands within Bands' may have originated in rest breaks for big bands in live performances, or for contractual reasons, but whatever the reason they produced great music.
Groups of musicians from within major big bands became very popular and successful. Jazz Club this week enjoys the great music they produced, and features Bob Crosby's Bobcats, Woody Herman's Woodchoppers, Tommy Dorsey's Clambake Seven, Artie Shaw's Grammercy Five, and a host of trios, quartets and Half Dozens which produced some memorable swinging music.
