On the Streets

Chris and Ayesha spend time on the streets, finding out what is really happening in Britain's knife crime crisis.

Chris and Ayesha spend time on the streets, finding out what is really happening in Britain's knife crime crisis. Ayesha visits Greater Manchester Police to look at the sort of weapons that have been taken off the streets as part of their Operation Sycamore campaign. She is astonished at the sheer range of knives on show, including huge blades bought from the Internet and of the homemade variety. The police tell her that we need to crack down using Stop and Search.

Meanwhile, Chris visits Polmont Young Offenders Institution to meet young men who are doing time for violence. He discusses their backgrounds and why they think they ended up in trouble. He also meets the governor of Polmont who tells him that the young men are victims too. Later, Ayesha visits an NHS Accident and Emergency to meet the doctors who have to deal with knife crime day in and day out. Dr Gayle Hann suggests that we need to adopt a public health model when it comes to tackling crime, one that looks at the causes of crime.
