Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

Every synagogue recently read the biblical tale of the Golden Calf.听 It鈥檚 one of the oddest stories 鈥 the Israelites leave Egypt after centuries of slavery.听 In a display of divine power called the 10 plagues, they escape to the Sinai desert and receive the law.听 Then with Moses, their leader, up a mountain talking to God, something very strange happens.听 They assume he isn鈥檛 coming back, take fright and then build themselves an idol 鈥 a golden calf 鈥 to soothe their insecurities.

I believe that this is what is called regression 鈥 when people are under stress, they tend to revert to less developed, childish ways of thinking.听 When the Israelites thought all was lost, they regressed into the simplistic world from which they been born, in which gold and animals were treated as sources of power.听 It took just a few weeks from seeing God on a mountain to praying to an idol.

Of course, regression is actually part of the human condition.听 When we are challenged, when life gets tough, we may reawaken infantile versions of ourselves.听 We can easily slip into poor eating habits, dependency and even irritable, self-interested behaviour.听 And it can be a life鈥檚 work to learn not to do this, if we ever get there.

Last week, I dropped into see Danny, the lovely guy who fixes my computer.听 He told me that he鈥檇 been at a supermarket and come across a woman with her trolley stacked high with packs of toilet paper and none left on the shelves.听 He asked her if she could spare one small pack, but apparently, she became rude and abusive and made it clear that she wouldn鈥檛 give him any at all.听 I liked Danny鈥檚 response: 鈥榣ady, do you know that Coronavirus is a disease of the respiratory system?鈥

This is an example of regression to selfish, territorial behaviour, sadly something we are seeing frequently in the current crisis.听 Unchecked, we risk becoming aggressive and defensive, pulling up the drawbridge to others just at the time when people are likely to be most isolated and in need of kindness and understanding.听 We are faced with a stark choice 鈥 regress to a world in which others become dispensable, or pause, take a deep breath, and give a pack of toilet paper to a stranger, assuming they actually want one!
