Archaeology, Cloud Gazing and Wildlife Watching

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Mark goes on the hunt for ticks and tells us more about these bloodthirsty arachnids.

Chris Watson is a BAFTA award winning sound recordist who has worked all over the world gathering sounds from the natural world. He recently recorded an episode of the Scotland Outdoors podcast with Mark and Euan and we have a clip of that on the programme.

The Scottish Charity Air Ambulance celebrates its seventh birthday this week. We take a look into the archive to the time Euan was a mock patient for them during a training flight and chat live on the programme to their chief executive, David Craig.

Professor of Archaeology at Aberdeen University, Gordon Noble, joins us down the line to tell us about his team’s recent discovery at Tap O’ Noth in Aberdeenshire.

Across Ö÷²¥´óÐã Radio Scotland we have been marking Mental Health Awareness Week. As part of that for Out of Doors, Helen Needham speaks to sea kayaker and outdoor enthusiast Nick Ray. Nick has severe depression and he talks to Helen about why spending time in the outdoors is so important for him and his mental health.

Mark takes a step back and takes a moment away from work and tasks at home to look at clouds for some perspective on life.

Our daily exercise adventure this week comes from our Ö÷²¥´óÐã Scotland colleague, environment correspondent Keven Keane and his daughter who take us on a cycle near their Aberdeenshire home.

Wildlife photographer Karen Miller joins us on the phone from her Highland home where she has made the most of lockdown by watching the wildlife around her from a small hide and on camera traps.

Euan has another mystery bird for us this week. Can you identify its dulcet tones?
