The Show Must Go On

Join Mark Stephen and Euan McIlwraith for a special programme on the weekend that would have been the 180th Royal Highland Show.

The show must go on! On the weekend we along with thousands of others would usually be at the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston near Edinburgh, we have a programme packed with show memories and live guests.

Alan Laidlaw, CEO of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) tells us how they are taking the sights and the sounds of the show online.

Euan takes us through a brief history of the Royal Highland Show from its days of travelling round the country to settling at Ingliston and everything in-between.

Former cattle herder Marjory Davidson shares her journey from winning rosettes to making them and how she’s still managing to attend ‘kist parties’ under lockdown.
What does it take to get livestock ready for judging? In 2014 we spoke to some people who were busy preening their cattle.

It turns out judging cattle is quite a tricky business. In 2008 Mark, Euan and Helen had a go at picking a winner in the Belted Galloway class.

RHASS President and broadcaster Fiona Armstrong shares her memories of reporting from the Royal Highland Show and her love for the food and farming of Dumfries and Galloway.

Helen Needham has been visiting the Royal Highland Show with her family since she was little. She chats to her mum Jane about her memories of entering carriage driving classes and showing cattle.

Rosemary Champion is a smallholder based near Carnoustie in Angus. She also keeps Shetland Cattle and was looking forward to a celebration of them at this year’s Highland Show which has obviously had to be postponed. She tells us what makes the breed so unique.

At many agricultural shows across Scotland there are usually classes for baking and home produce. With that in mind Mark has put pen to paper to write a poem about the humble scone

Young Farmers’ National Chairman Gemma Bruce tells us what they’ve been doing to keep people connected whilst the the Royal Highland Show and all the other local shows are cancelled.
