From today it's mandatory to wear a face covering in enclosed public spaces in England. The list includes shops, supermarkets, shopping centres, banks, building societies and post offices. It extends to train and bus stations and airports. Although there are possible fines of up to 拢100, organisations representing rank-and-file police officers say they will only enforce the new rules as a "last resort". That's led to fears about shop workers coming into confrontation with people who refuse to wear a covering. It comes as a survey from The Institute of Customer Service shows a quarter of shop staff have faced physical abuse during the pandemic.

Gyms reopen their doors at the weekend in England too and many have invested heavily in becoming 'Covid-secure'. There'll be limitations on numbers and regular cleaning but gym-goers are also being asked to do their bit by adhering to strict social distancing rules. Will that work? And whereas there was once a shortage of pasta, there's now a paucity of plaster! The lockdown DIY boom has led to people seeking out materials from builders merchants and wholesalers and that's left the trade short of supplies. We talk to a woman who runs a building merchants in Manchester about how shopping and DIY habits have changed
