Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Tom Cozens, a presenter and director.聽
It was wedding day. I was best man and my suit was a bit fluffy looking, so the groom gave me his lint roller. If you haven鈥檛 seen one, they鈥檙e these weird sticky tubes which collect up fluff from your clothes. And it did its job, my suit was looking sharp. Years later, I鈥檇 used this roller multiple times, and as it was covered entirely in fluff it was no longer very useful. Until one day, a friend of mine asked to borrow it. He peeled off the top layer of paper, and then proceeded to use the new fresh sticky layer to collect up the lint from his suit as my jaw dropped.聽 For years I鈥檇 been using the roller all wrong.
Sometimes, the passage of time doesn鈥檛 solve our problems. People often say, Time is the healer of all wounds. But, as I walk with my friends through difficult experiences, like divorce or trauma, it appears to me that we can carry emotional wounds for long periods of time. Whilst time is very often helpful, sometimes we might need to find a different way of healing. Recent research reveals the powerful healing effects art and storytelling can have on our lives. A friend of mine called Hannah Rose Thomas spends time with women who have suffered trauma in war zones, teaching them to paint their own self-portraits. This gives them the courage to face and process their experiences.聽
Hannah then paints the women in her own style giving them a voice; enabling their stories to be heard in places like the UN. Healing stories are one of the main reasons I got into making films. I鈥檝e seen the transformative effect a good film can have on people鈥檚 lives, as they follow the hero courageously facing and overcoming their wounds. But I believe that perhaps the greatest healing story of all time is of the crucified Jesus being resurrected. In the bible it tells us that 鈥渂y his wounds you have been healed鈥. It is a story of God鈥檚 desire to see us free from our pain. A story of God coming to be with us in our pain, and ultimately a God who was willing to die so that we might be healed. Maybe sometimes, as with the lint roller, we need someone else鈥檚 guidance in finding healing for ourselves.
