Michael Mosley challenges 12 of the UK鈥檚 leading medical experts to diagnose two patients whose debilitating symptoms have baffled other doctors. Each expert specialises in a different field and has their own ideas about what might be wrong. By combining their knowledge and using cutting-edge technology to test their theories, they try to give these patients the answers they desperately need.

Paul鈥檚 dreams of a happy retirement have been ruined by a mystery condition that has caused his face to swell up so dramatically that he sometimes struggles to see. He has been to multiple specialists and undergone numerous tests, but no-one has been able to come up with a diagnosis. The lack of answers has left his family desperately worried. For the team, this is a complex case with multiple lines of investigation.

While the team try to come up with a diagnosis for Paul, Michael presents them with a second patient, who is also desperate for answers. Judy鈥檚 problems began back in 2007 when she started struggling to swallow food and being sick. Her nausea has continued ever since, and she has reached a point where she now struggles to eat solid food and is dramatically losing weight. She has lost ten kilos in the last three months, and her family are plagued by worries that it might be cancer.

The team of experts offer up various theories, but consultant gastroenterologist Dr Ray Shidrawi is convinced that he has seen this rare condition before. In fact, he is so confident that he can solve the problem, he wants to take on the case alone.
