Mark and Stuart shine a spotlight on independent record labels, talking to label founders Andy Votel and MALKA about the joys and challenges of running their own labels

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie present a feast of great music and chat for weekend breakfast.

As part of 6 Music's 'State of Independents' series of special programmes celebrating independent artists, labels and venues, Mark and Stuart shine a spotlight on independent record labels. They discuss the rich history of independent music in the UK and beyond, play some of their favourite tracks to be released on indie labels and chat to label founders Andy Votel and MALKA about the challenges and joys of running their own labels.

MALKA aka Tamara Schlesinger is a Glasgow-based solo artist and the former leader of band '6 Day Riot'. She set up Tantrum Records 18 years ago and takes control of all her releases; creating the artwork, booking all tours and managing the daily running of the company. She now shares her label-running knowledge as a mentor and a lecturer in Music Business.

Andy Votel co-founded Twisted Nerve records with Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy. Andy also runs the reissue label Finders Keepers.
