Rum, Forvie and Dr Hamish MacInnes

Join Mark Stephen and Helen Needham for the latest outdoor activities from Shetland to the Borders, plus the key stories for those who live and work in the countryside.

Mark heads along to Forvie Natural Nature Reserve to discover the reserve staff hard at work doing their winter tasks.

Our midweek podcast this week is all about wool. Mark and Euan chatted with Louise Scollay from the Wool Work Podcast to get a guide to Scottish Wool - from Sheep to Shawl. We have an excerpt.

Earlier this week at the Nature of Scotland Awards, the lifetime achievement award was presented to Dr Mark Young in recognition of his considerable contribution to nature conservation, particularly in relation to insects and moths. Mark went to meet him to find out all about his life and career.

We pay tribute to renowned Scottish mountaineer and inventor Dr Hamish MacInnes who died earlier this week at the age of 90. We have an excerpt of an interview recorded 30 years ago with Edi Stark as well hearing from those in the mountaineering community about his legacy and influence.

Our archive piece comes from a trip Helen made to Rum. She heads out in the dark on a walk to find a Manx shearwater colony.

And we stick with Rum as we chat to a couple who have just relocated to the island from Bristol. Alex Mumford and Elizabeth Cracknell had never visited the island before winning the chance to move there. We find out why they made the move and speak to Steve Robertson from the Isle of Rum Community Trust.

Mark was inspired by the sights and sounds of Forvie to write a poem.

And we have another mystery bird. This one strikes an attractive pose, but can you recognise it just by its call?
