Screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce on forgiveness; review of Russell T Davies’ TV series, It’s A Sin, rooted in the 1980s HIV/Aids crisis.

A new series of books on How the Bible Can Help Us Understand includes a reflection on the nature of forgiveness by screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce. Frank and Virginia Moffatt, the series editor, join Cathy Macdonald to explore what the Bible can teach us about forgiving.

How important is it for children to see themselves reflected back in the books they read, and to find it in broader literary reading too? Jeda Pearl Lewis, a disabled Scottish-Jamaican poet and co-director of Scottish BAME Writers Network, and teacher and stammering activist Adam Black, discuss how to create a diverse library or reading list and the importance it holds for children.

In the lead up to Burns Night, Cathy speaks to author Clark McGinn about why it might be time to reassess an aspect of the Bard’s life, in light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the renewed discussion on Scotland’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.
Cathy hears about the unearthing of a horrific photograph captured in the Ukraine during the Holocaust, which took Professor Wendy Lower on a revelatory journey.

Ahead of Holocaust Remembrance Day Professor Joe Goldblatt, treasurer of Edinburgh Interfaith Association, and Professor Wendy Lower explain why it’s so important to engage the next generation in this period of history.

John Wilkes, a gay activist in Scotland in the 1980s and 90s, takes a look at Russell T Davies’ new TV drama series, It’s A Sin, rooted in the HIV/Aids crisis of the early 1980s. John recalls the fear and confusion in the gay community amidst rumours of a deadly new virus at the time.
