Radio 2 Celebrates Musicals: Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Dame Olivia Newton-John

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber and Dame Olivia Newton-John are on the show chatting to Zoe about the incredible world of musicals.

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber chats to Zoe about his latest musical, Cinderella, and his incredible career as one of the most influential and iconic names in musical theatre. Cinderella stars Carrie Hope Fletcher in the lead role which re-invents the fairy tale. Andrew says: 鈥淚t鈥檚 about beauty, but it鈥檚 about beauty being what you are rather than what you try and make yourself.鈥 This version has no Prince Charming, but instead his younger brother, Prince Sebastian, played by Ivano Turco in his West End debut. It's opening in April at the Gillian Lynne Theatre in London's West End, which was previously home to 鈥楥ats鈥, 鈥楾he Phantom of The Opera鈥 and 鈥楢spects of Love鈥. Andrew began recording the songs at home, because of not being able to put on the show at the moment due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Andrew famously started working with Tim Rice since 1965, when Andrew was 17. They have collaborated to compose numerous musicals together, including Joseph, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita.

Dame Olivia Newton-John is on the show talking to Zoe all about Grease, one of the world's biggest ever musical movies. Plus Olivia's daughter Chloe is also here to talk about the new single they have recorded together. Grease was released in 1978 and was based on the 1971 musical of the same name by Jim Jacobs and Warren Cassey. It was filmed in June 1977 at Venice High School in LA. The producer Allan Carr saw the play in New York in 1972 and instantly saw it鈥檚 potential for the film. He snapped up the rights for $200,000 and took the project to Paramount. Olivia famously starred opposite John Travolta in the movie, where he played the role of Danny Zuko.

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

It鈥檚 been a weird few months, but now we鈥檝e been doing this for a while, I suspect you, like me, have found a rhythm to help you through the day. Pyjamas are my new day wear, to be honest they always were, and because a night out to the theatre or anywhere else for that matter isn鈥檛 happening, I鈥檝e taken to dancing and singing more, in day wear, a lot, all the time in my kitchen. And I don鈥檛 mean a polite shuffle or a dainty two step, I mean big, messy flailing arms, throwing myself around, dancing and loud, out of tune singing.听听It gets the heart rate up, releases the endorphins and lifts me when I鈥檓 feeling glum. And thank fully the house is detached so I don鈥檛 need to worry about turning the music up.

One morning last week I was listening to a much loved musicals classic, and a song came on that demanded the full Bottley; I threw off my dressing gown and went for it, really went for it, lip-synching along with a wooden spoon mic, throwing shapes, I even bust out the running man. I thought I鈥檇 glance at the window to check out how fabulous I actually looked. And It was then that I saw a delivery man smiling back at me and holding up a parcel 鈥楽hall I leave this here, love?鈥 he said.听

Singing and Dancing in the Bible is always a symbol of joy and usually around a time of huge turmoil and suffering. King David danced after long fought battles and when the Ark of the Covenant was returned to its rightful place. Technically it wasn鈥檛 Moses that led the Jewish people out of slavery and through the parted red sea, it was his sister Miriam, a prophet in her own right and she danced while she did it. I suspect neither of them did a polite cha cha cha either.

In that moment the delivery driver appeared I had two choices, to stop my impromptu performance, go and answer the door a bit embarrassed or to throw myself into it even more enthusiastically. Guess which one I went for? I went to the door, and as I sashayed out onto the mat I glanced down the drive and watched as the delivery driver did a wild set of samba walks with a side order of jazz hands all the way back to his van. I don鈥檛 know when we鈥檒l all get a chance to shake our stuff together again, or enjoy a show, but until then, all we can do, is keep on singing and dancing! After all the show must go on!
