Gordon Ramsay, the world famous chef and restaurateur, tells Zoe about his brand new 主播大秀 One game show called Bank Balance. It's a high-stakes, high-pressure game show where contestants test their poise, precision, knowledge and nerve to succeed to build themselves a fortune - or see it come crashing down in an instant. Gordon was born in Scotland and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon and always aspired to be a professional footballer. However an injury early on led him to change his path and instead focus his efforts elsewhere, going back to college to study hotel management. His dedication and natural talent led him to train with some of the world鈥檚 leading chefs, including Albert Roux and Marco Pierre White in London, and Guy Savoy and Jo毛l Robuchon in France. Now internationally renowned and holding 7 Michelin stars, Ramsay has opened a string of successful restaurants across the globe, from Singapore to the United States.

Rag'n'Bone Man performs music for Zoe from his forthcoming album Life By Misadventure, recorded live at home, exclusively for the show. His 2017 landmark debut Human was a phenomenal success; a four times platinum album which shot to number one on the week of release in the UK, it became the fasted-selling album by a male artist for the entire decade and earned him three BRIT awards and Ivor Novello Awards. The album has since been streamed more than five billion times, sold 4.2 million copies and charted number one in six countries, whilst the single 鈥楬uman鈥� has now sold more than 10 million copies.

Pause For Thought

Like anyone who has to host a Zoom meeting, I have been following the deliberations of Handforth Parish Council with close interest. Tempers lost, procedures challenged, accounts muted; a lesson that our efforts to come together digitally in this time of being physically kept apart, may not always produce the desired outcome.

My parish met via Zoom on Ash Wednesday to begin the season of Lent. I am neither an early adopter of technology - I鈥檝e only just discovered how to work the church dehumidifier - nor a believer that there is only gain, not loss, when we shift from real space to digital space. But I鈥檓 much more enthusiastic now than I was before we started doing it.

It was particularly tricky on Wednesday for we have to make the sign of the cross in ashes on our own foreheads, instead of having it done for us in church; but all went well. We ashed ourselves, we sang along to the hymns, we prayed together. No-one cited Standing Orders, or questioned the authority of the Curate, or forgot they weren鈥檛 muted and said something judgmental about another鈥檚 curtains. How very good and pleasant it is, Psalm 133 reminds us, when kindred live together in unity!

It was not just that the service went smoothly, and the job was done. A tiny screen, an imperfect internet connection, the dog going mad when next door鈥檚 takeaway is delivered, make for an imperfect experience; but that doesn鈥檛 really matter. It was just great to be together, to see each other, to smile when a familiar face appears on a wobbly screen, a familiar voice out of a tinny speaker. It鈥檚 the same with Zoom cocktails, or knit and natter on Teams, or a birthday video call to my brother.

It makes me think of the most famous quotation from Jean-Paul Sartre, French existentialist philosopher - 鈥榟ell is other people鈥�. I get it, we鈥檝e all had our Handforth moments; but I think it is, overwhelmingly, exactly wrong, and that is a big part of the reason why I am a CofE Vicar, not a a French existentialist philosopher.

Hell, I think, is solitary confinement.

One of the unintended consequences of lockdown, I hope, is that we rediscover that we are who we are because we belong to each other; and that it is in relationship that our unique individuality, our strengths, and peculiarities, and character, pay their dividend.
