Sleep in Shifts, Future of Rail, Google Ads

The future of rail post pandemic. And listeners complain about misleading driving licence renewal adverts online, a year after google promised to stop them.

A Supreme Court judgement will impact whether home care providers have to pay millions in back pay for overnight sleeping shifts. Carers say that sleep in shifts, where they can sleep, but must be available if needed should be considered work and therefore paid at minimum wage. Care providers say that social care packages from local authorities don't pay enough to fund this. We hear from people impacted by the judgement.
Train operators are considering the future of the railways. Passenger journeys have fallen significantly as a result of national lockdowns and advice to work from home. In the first four months of 2020 journeys fell to 35 million, compared to 439 million during the same period in 2019. We look at some of the solutions being considered, including locking of carriages for parcels, or making space in the timetable for tourist trips.
You & Yours listeners have complained about misleading adverts online for driving licence renewal. The websites charge you significantly more than the DVLA service and some customers say its not clear the sites aren't government affiliated. Google promised to ban such adverts from its search results but a year later the ads are still appearing. We investigate what action the search engine is taking.
