A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Peter began to speak to those assembled in the house of Cornelius:聽鈥業 truly understand that God shows no partiality,聽but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.聽You know the message he sent to the people of Israel,聽preaching peace by Jesus Christ鈥攈e is Lord of all.聽That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced:聽how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power;聽how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,聽for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem.聽They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear,聽not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses,聽and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.聽He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead.聽All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.鈥� 聽

When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James,聽and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.聽And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen,聽they went to the tomb. They had been saying to one another,聽鈥榃ho will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?鈥櫬燱hen they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large,聽had already been rolled back. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man,聽dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.聽But he said to them, 鈥楧o not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth,聽who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him.聽But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee;聽there you will see him, just as he told you.鈥� So they went out and fled from the tomb,聽for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Death is the greatest and most devastating liar. The lie that the final breath is the end,聽聽there is nothing more. The lie聽 that we聽 will always be separated from those we聽 have loved,聽聽ultimately losing those we love for ever.We all know the finality聽 of the death of聽 a friend or聽 family member.聽When something special happens our instinct is immediately聽 to tell them, to call them.聽聽Then we remember. They鈥檙e not here.Of course death matters. It is brutal, terrible and cruel.聽But it lies when it claims to be the final word.Easter calls time on the lie.聽 The women in Mark鈥檚 gospel had believed the lie聽鈥� going to聽 the tomb聽 to anoint a dead body.聽Yet聽 all their fears were based on a false assumption about the power of death and an inadequate understanding of the power of God.聽聽Instead right there in the grave聽 were聽 signs of resurrection .聽The聽 action of God聽 was revealed through angels who greeted them, reassured them, and told them that Jesus of Nazareth聽 had been raised.聽This news changes everything - overwhelming every assumption聽 about the way the world works.聽Mark tells us that 鈥渢hey went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them!鈥� 鈥�.聽Well they might! Their whole understanding of things was changed.The truth sets us free. Lies聽 bind us, enslave us. And no lie binds more tightly than the lies of death.聽If death is telling the truth then we may as well live for ourselves.聽Then the last year is yet another cruel period of history taking聽 from us those聽 we loved,聽ending聽 lives cruelly and tragically.聽But if Jesus who was dead is alive: death is a liar. The truth of Christ is the reality, we have certain聽 hope and a changed future.聽We will be reunited with those we love. We are offered forgiveness and freedom to live God鈥檚 new life as a gift 鈥� to be taken or ignored.How can we respond?We can receive this聽 new reality. Jesus, crucified and risen, is alive today and brings聽 life and hope.聽The joy and purpose he gave to the disciples is exactly the same as is offered to us today.聽We are each and all invited to accept that new reality, welcoming聽 the living dynamic presence of God into our lives聽 -聽聽allowing the one who conquers the greatest lie to give us the greatest life. I urge you to take this offer of life today with a simple prayer,聽鈥淛esus Christ, with all my doubts and all my failings and wrongs, I want you to rule in my life鈥�. Simple, almost banal, transforming.We can then live聽 with the risen Christ, doing what he calls us to do. The disciples not only have private hope but hope for the world.聽聽That is why the church gets involved with resisting injustice, treasuring our world, tending the needy 鈥撀爄t鈥檚聽 why Christians throughout聽 the centuries have lived聽 with compassion and love for all who are excluded and marginalised.聽They breathed the oxygen of hope through the resurrection of the crucified God.聽As the resurrection bursts out of the tomb and floods the world so聽 the church must go with that torrent of good news and love,聽transformed, celebrating and declaring in word and deed the truth聽 that death is a liar and that life is offered to all.聽The overwhelming generosity of God to us should inspire the same by us, in everything from private acts of love and charity to international aid generously maintained.聽We have received overwhelmingly, so let us give generously.
Death deceives. Christ is the truth, for He is risen indeed.聽Let our lives change. Let the Alleluias ring.
