When you live and work in the city, there is no better feeling than escaping into Scotland’s wilderness at the weekend. Ramsay MacMahon guides us through the perfect short getaway in Durness, surrounded by brilliant beaches and stunning sea lochs.

Starting in Ard Neakie, once a busy ferry terminal, he crosses the natural sandbar causeway to discover the old ferry house and takes a look at the ruins of a limestone quarry. He then travels to Ceannabeinne Clearance Village, where the dramatic cliffs and beaches hide a sad past.

Ramsay’s next stop takes him to Smoo Cave where he discovers the area's dark secrets and learns that there may be an additional chamber within the cave still to be found. His journey ends at Balnakeil beach and final resting place of famous Gaelic poet Rob Donn MacKay.
