Edi Stark meets eminent and maverick painter Jock McFadyen. The artist who calls himself a ‘dunce’ describes one of the most influential days of his life when his grandfather, took him to Fairfield shipyard and Kelvingrove art gallery. When his father got a job as a draughtsman for Michelin, the family moved to England where he felt immediately comfortable and embraced youth culture in a less violent environment. Having been expelled from art school where he was doing a foundation course, he then moved to London, lived in squats with his girlfriend and baby and got into Chelsea art school, where he was quickly successful. He talks about being drawn towards painting inner city desolation in the east of London for which he’s most famous and how a commission in Orkney provoked a radical move in his work.
