Pop In The First Degree: Bananarama at 40

Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin look back at 40 years of milestone moments in their career, reflecting on TV performances, chart countdowns, archive interviews and more.

Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin - Bananarama - are the most charted British all-female act in history. Since their first hit single in 1982 they have scored countless hit singles and albums all over the world, creating some era-defining looks and music videos which continue to delight their legions of fans today. They look back at 40 years of milestone moments in their highly successful career, neither knowing what they are going to hear leading to some priceless reactions from both. They hear their earliest interviews on children's TV phone-in shows, their first appearance on the UK Top 40 countdown with Tommy Vance and on Top of the Pops, through to their appearances on both Band Aid in 1984 and Band Aid 2 in 1989. Around this time, the line-up had changed and they reflect on the difficulties Jacqui O'Sullivan faced when she replaced original member, Siobhan Fahey. Keren and Sara would continue as a duo and the success continued, with further TV appearances including a comic turn on "Benidorm". They recall how they felt emotional when the original trio reunited for a tour in 2017, prompting them to reflect on their entire career from their earliest demos to their most recent album, "Masquerade". The show is packed with their biggest hits from across the decades, starting with their first single, "Aie a Mwana", through to their earliest chart successes including "Cruel Summer" and "Shy Boy", to the Stock, Aitken and Waterman-produced tracks including "Venus" and "I Heard a Rumour" through to more recent hits including "Move in my Direction". They discuss motherhood, the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated industry, being compared to The Spice Girls, and more, with lots of laughs along the way.
