From "the right hand of the Father" to the "Father, Son and Holy Spirit" there are countless references to God being a "He" in religious texts but there are those who argue this is a flawed understanding of God from which can flow both misogyny and adherence to male supremacy.

This debate took centre place at the Church of England Synod this week when a number of priests asked to be allowed to use gender neutral terms instead

The Church said it would set up a new commission on the matter in the Spring- any potential changes, which would mark a departure from traditional teachings dating back millennia, would have to be approved by the Church's decision making body, the Synod.

Presenter Audrey Carville develops that conversation and explores what role, if any, the attribution of the male pronoun to God, and the patriarchal nature of all churches, plays in cultivating misogyny and negative attitudes to women and gender equality.
