Dezron Douglas's Inspirations

US bassist Dezron Douglas shares his musical inspirations, plus concert highlights from jazz harpist Alina Bzhezhinska.

Kevin Le Gendre hears from US bassist and educator Dezron Douglas. A prot茅g茅 of the great Jackie McLean, Dezron has established himself as a highly creative composer and formidable bander, and has worked alongside the likes of Pharaoh Sanders, Ravi Coltrane, Geri Allen and Louis Hayes, to name a few. A leading player in the jazz world, he has been recorded on more than 100 albums, and is also active educator on the Jazz Studies faculty at NYU Steinhardt. Here Dezron shares some of the music and artists that have inspired him, including a joy-raising track by UK acid-jazz band, The Brand New Heavies.

Also in the programme, concert highlights from London-based, Ukrainian/Polish jazz harpist Alina Bzhezhinska and her HipHarp Collective recorded live at the Barbican for J to Z, as they blend jazz, hip hop and the ever-ethereal sounds of the harp together to create new and innovative compositions.
