Twenty years ago this week American, British and other forces were making final, last minute preparations before they invaded Iraq. This was part of the US response to the attacks on its country on September 11 2001- George W Bush's so called 'War on Terror'

We were told that the world was 90 minutes from Armageddon- that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction which could be deployed within 45 minutes- no such weapons were ever found

The invasion would ultimately lead to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, the deaths of potentially hundreds of thousands of people, the destabilisation of the country and region and the creation of a power vacuum which allowed the emergence of the so called Islamic State terrorist group

Two decades later, what consequences of that decision are still being felt today? Was there another way to deal with Saddam Hussein? And can the failures of the Iraq war be used today to excuse shying away from confronting tyranny?
