It's the time of year when important life choices are being made, decisions about careers, jobs, studies - all being made by mostly 18 year olds as they get their exam results

They are big decisions- some will include university, others will be in further education, others will take up apprenticeships, and some will go straight into work

We live in a time when there has never been more choice of degree subjects to study at university and many might think that's a good thing

But is it? Do so many people now have degrees that they don't count for much any more?

Or does university still do what it set out to do- create a better educated workforce, turbo-charge social mobility, offer something for everyone rather than the privileged few and teach students to think critically, gain their independence and broaden horizons?
