"Och, that'll probably wash out!"

Sean remembers the day the coalman brought a bag of coal through his mother's newly wallpapered kitchen.

"When you were a wee lad growing up did your coalman go through your front door?" asks Ron in Belfast. "Or did you have an 'entry'?"

"We were too poor to have an entry!" Sean says. "We had a back lane."

"I remember my Granny's house in north Belfast," says Ron. "The coalman brought the coal on his back through the front door out into the yard and my granny shouted, 'Watch the wallpaper!' and 'Give us a bag of slack!'"

"Same order in our house!" Sean says. "Sometimes the coalman didn't come up the back lane, and he would come in through the front door, and the kitchen, out into the back yard. And a couple of days beforehand we had got the kitchen wallpapered. And as he was turning out into the back yard the corner of the bag hit the wallpaper. We could see this black line on the wallpaper. My mother was fit to be tied. She never spoke but she had a face on her like thunder. And the coalman spotted the black line on the wallpaper. He just looked at my mother and said, 'Och that'll probably wash off!' and walked out."
