Treasures and Tombs

Episode 1 of 4

Professor Bettany Hughes explores the Wonders of Bulgaria, including the world's oldest golden treasure hoard in Varna, a 2,200-year-old UNESCO World Heritage-listed Thracian tomb.

In the Black Sea town of Varna, Professor Bettany Hughes is granted special access to a 6,000-year-old treasure hoard which includes the oldest worked gold ever discovered. She is shown artefacts not yet on public display which reveal the everyday lives of the people who forged one of Europe's first cultures. In the Valley of the Thracian Kings, Bettany is allowed inside the original 2,200-year-old UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kazanlak tomb and permitted to hold the golden drinking vessel of a Thracian king. In the village of Kosti, she experiences the enduring Nestinari firewalking ritual that some believe originated in Thracian times.
