Alice Randall: My Black Country

Songwriter and novelist Alice Randall talks about her book and album My Black Country, a collection of songs all written by Alice and recorded by African-American female artists.

American songwriter, novelist and lecturer Alice Randall talks about her book and album My Black Country. It's a collection of songs all written by Alice and recorded by African-American female artists. She describes her own story to Ricky and highlights the overlooked artists who are an integral part in the history of country music.

In 1994 Alice Randall became the first Black woman to write a number-one country hit with XXX's and OOO's, recorded by Trisha Yearwood. Alice says, 'I had songs recorded in the 80s, in the 90s, in the 2000s and 2010s, but I never once had the joy of hearing one of the songs that I wrote from the perspective of a Black woman recorded by a black woman. With this project... I hope to change that.'
