Episode 1

Barra Best looks at how biodiversity can be safeguarded. Featuring puffins in Northern Ireland, beavers in Scotland, orcas in Spain, the Bavarian pine vole and the white stork of Sweden.

The natural world around us is in crisis, and biodiversity is in shocking decline – but all is not lost. This series, presented by Barra Best, shows how when we humans change our behaviour, the natural world can spring back surprisingly quickly. A way forward that works for both humans and the natural world is possible.

In this episode, we see the efforts being made to protect puffins and other sea birds from rats and ferrets on Rathlin Island off the coast of Northern Ireland. Beavers in Scotland are being rehomed so their return to the landscape is not at the expense of farmers. Orcas in Spain are attacking boats – but there may be a simple solution for sailors. Is the Bavarian pine vole extinct or just incredibly rare? German scientists are determined to find out. And thanks to conservationists, the white stork is making a comeback to the skies of Sweden.
