Art from the great depression
During the great depression of the 1930s President Roosevelt launched the New Deal and the greatest federal spending programme of the era - the Works Progress Administration or WPA. It became a catalyst for the development of 20th Century art and art institutions, helping to establish the social realist movement and producing some of the finest works of public art in the nation. As Jane O'Brien reports, The Smithsonian's Archives of American Art has staged a timely exhibition in Washington to illustrate the legacy of the era.
