Remembering Chico Mendes and a carpet ride to Uzbekistan.

Remembering Chico Mendes
21 years ago this week, the Brazilian environmental activist Chico Mendes was assassinated. But thanks to his actions, more than eight million acres of rain forest are now protected. On the day of the anniversary of his death, Matthew Bannister talks to Chico's daughter Elenira, who was only a young girl when he died but now runs a foundation in his name - continuing the work her father started.

A carpet ride to Uzbekistan
After a student trip to Uzbekistan, Chris Alexander ended returning to the country and setting up a carpet workshop using traditional methods and designs, something he originally knew nothing about. He tells Matthew the stories of the women who became involved in the project and the community they formed together. His book "A Carpet Ride to Khiva" is to be published in January 2010.
