Good vibrations

There's talk of 'the blasted heath' and heathland can certainly be a fairly bleak place. On a blustery October day there is very little colour left - it doesn't seem like ideal reptile weather. Polpular conception is that reptiles bask out in the sunshine, but that's only at the beginning of the day when they need to warm up. Once they are warm they need to stay out of the sun. Bill looks for a basking place... and finds an adder with lovely black markings. Adders aren't big snakes. People are often freaked out by grass snakes, thinking they are adders, but only the adder has the V shapes all the way down the body and they are much smaller. If you get bitten by an adder go to hospital as the bitten part may swell up to enormous size. Bill's adder crawls away - adders can't hear, but they can feel vibrations so will get out of your way if you clomp about.
